Viewing Notes
When this popped up on Prime as a recommended title I was like “yeah I wanna see that again since it’s been a while.” Did not realize it had been likely 20+ years since I’ve seen this! It’s bananas how fast time has flown these last couple of decades. I seriously thought this was an early ‘00s film, not 1997! So it definitely counts towards my 90s rewatch project.
This is a fun creature feature that gets a full star bump for being set in Chicago and not just using establishing shots but capturing the Field Museum both outside and the main lobby. Really neat to see.
The story is bonkers and the monster is pretty cool. There’s some wicked kills and decent thrills for a second tier cast fully committed to the story. Given the setting I’m very surprised this movie hasn’t appeared at any of the 24hr movie marathons in the last decade. It would be a gas to see with a good crowd.
