In revisiting the Ring series I had forgotten that I viewed this one a couple years ago. I forget so much these days. When it started I had the same reaction when I saw that Yukie Nakama is Sadako then was like “this seems really familiar…”

I really like this installment even tho it also eliminates the hook that made the original Ringu so great. This is the origin story of Sadako set 30 years prior to the Ringu events. Altho it really doesn’t look like it’s 30 years earlier; there are no visual or dialogue cues that suggest that other than an opening subtitle. Makes me more curious how any of her origin was recorded and transferred to VHS bc nothing is being recorded here except for one of the characters admission of enabling Sadako.

So I don’t think the timeline logic or mystery really works but a very good cast and terrific performance by a then 20yo Yukie Nakama. I don’t believe Takashi Miike gets influenced or inspired by his peers’ work but I gotta wonder if he saw this and planted a seed for what would become Over Your Dead Body. Interesting parallels and shared imagery.
