Revisiting for a podcast I’m guesting on soon. I don’t have the Arrow set but I’m guessing this transfer is from it bc this looks a lot better than the old dvd release I’ve gotten from the library. Okay, just a little better as it was still not great but decent. Curious how it looks on Blu.

I still really like this movie. It works so much better divorced from the original RINGU mythology. And in that sense this is more like a supervillain origin story with a tragic ending. Sadako has powers but just doesn’t know it nor how to harness them. People mysteriously die the the mob (the theatre troupe) wants justice. Then it gets all Dark Phoenix on that shiz.

I’m still not keen on them setting this 30 years prior to the events in RINGU. At least not how it’s depicted here b/c the fashion and particularly the hairstyles don’t look like 1967. tbh I’d guess 80s or maybe 70s. It’s distracting. Yukie Nakama is great, however. She’s essentially “Carrie” as Sadako. Appreciate how they’ve brought back Masako as Sadako’s mother for all these films when she’s only used in the flashbacks.
