Viewing Notes

After viewing the first Sharknado the other day I really wanted to watch the next one since the first one is such a straight ahead shark attack flick done in The Asylum style, not the crazy parade of celebrity cameos, as I noted.

This is the movie, only a year removed, where the “franchise” *ahem* jumps the shark as it’s a litany of cameos from the word go. Seriously. Robert Hays of AIRPLANE fame is the pilot (Rachel True his co-pilot). Kelly Osbourne is a flight attendant. Perez Hilton is a passenger. This is just the opening sequence. Cut to the hospital and it’s Billy Ray Cyrus as a doctor (!) and Downtown Julie Brown as nurse (!!). And it goes on from there. Even Judd Hirsch reprising his taxi driver role is eyeroll inducing.

All that said, I do really like that they actually shot on location in NYC. It’s quite impressive that they could secure so many choice spots like Citi Field and Statue of Liberty and so on. Also despite the CG sharks this is a fairly gory ultra-violent flick w/a decent amount of practical FX in play. The downside is that it’s hard to take anything seriously since it’s all so tongue-in-cheek even when people are getting killed, faces chewed off and whatnot.

Also the Matt Lauer / Al Roker stuff is super cringe. Just gross to see Lauer now. At the time having both the Today Show and Live! with Regis and Kelly in the movie was quite an accomplishment for The Asylum. Now it’s a bad look (altho I still like the Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan stuff).

The marriage proposal at the end is ridiculous and a real punctation mark to finish this dumb movie.
