Viewing Notes

Claude Rains as another Universal Monster!

There’s a good analogy in this for our present day situation dealing with a pandemic. There’s multiple murders at the opera house so they close it down. The public outcry is “when will they open the opera again?!” The police want to wait until the murderer is apprehended; the public just want to go to the opera even if it means they will be killed. Sound familiar?

I had wanted to view this after seeing Karloff in THE CLIMAX (1944) which was originally meant to be a sequel that was reworked into its own thing despite using the same opera house set and stages at Universal. Given that this movie is a Universal horror flick I’m surprised it took me so long to finally watch it. It’s good!

I don’t quite buy that Claudin (Rains) would necessarily go full psycho after getting the acid in the face but I guess it’s possible. Just seems a bit wild that he’s this introverted older man that goes full on killer but okay!

This movie was scheduled in a KAST watch party today but I found it on Archive.org apparently uploaded from a Blu-ray rip. Looks very nice.
