«Fulci for Fake» is the first biopic on Lucio Fulci. Lucio Fulci is an enigma. The mystery that surrounds Fulci is linked in part to his personal life. The director only rarely spoke about himself in interviews. But he did let his experience be reflected in his films. The setting of the film sees Nicola, a successful actor, agree to play the part of Lucio Fulci in a biopic on the director. Nicola will ask himself probing questions about the real nature of a man who, in his own lifetime, had already rewritten his biography.

Had high hopes for this one esp. since I’ve been viewing selected works from Fulci recently. Sadly this is more about his general life and relationships rather than any kind of examination of his film work and how he developed his style in context of the period. It should’ve been about that. Additionally, the device used to tell his life story is awful and a distraction. Why they thought this would be interesting is beyond me b/c it just sucks any energy from the real stories.
Maybe half of what is presented is actually worthwhile, which is a shame since his daughter Camilla passed away after this film was completed. However, many of the anecdotes given really don’t amount to much or shed much light on Fulci, the man and director. It’s such an odd mess of a documentary and so disappointing. It needed some film historians well versed in Fulci’s catalog to provide the background and foundational history as they moved thru the timeline. Someone like Kim Newman and several others I’ve seen on special features or even in the doc All the Colors of Giallo.
Frustrating watch and to think about.
