This is a really interesting Ultraman movie… it’s still canon yet takes place 15 years into the future after a devastating event has wiped out most of the population in Japan. All that remains are a few children and a ragtag group of all female soldiers of the Earth Defense Force. I guess it’s another universe in the multiverse established previously.
Ultraman Zero, Ultraman Dyna and Ultraman Cosmos teamup to defeat a powerful kaiju Zetton who transforms into an even more powerful Hyper Zetton. The three Ultramen ultimately transform into Ultraman Saga to defeat the enemy. It’s pretty badass that entire final sequence. I do love seeing these Ultramen team up, too.
Why it’s interesting is that the EDF team are all former AKB48 members, the biggest/most famous idol group in Japan. I’m guessing this was a crossover ploy to garner interest from their large fanbase. AKB48 has been a launching pad for several members to go onto other entertainment pursuits like acting. They’re pretty cool here and look great in their EDF gear. They also pilot small mecha vehicles to assist in stopping the alien attacks.
This movie was part of the DKUTV Ultraman programming in conjunction with the virtual KaijuConLine event happening this weekend. This was the third of nine films scheduled for the day. The following movie Ultraman Geed The Movie wasn’t on the announced schedule but since there was some extra time, Josef just added it last minute. I really wanted to see that one b/c it looks good but I had to take a break after 3 movies in a row.
