When I saw lots of chatter about this movie when its 20th anniversary date hit (Aug 25) I decided to request it from the library for my 20 in 20 Project. Was curious to see how well it holds up.
Although I didn’t remember a lot of it (I thought this had an entirely different plot but I probably confused it with one of the sequels) this is still an entertaining movie but I know I enjoyed it more on that first viewing than now.
A lot of demeaning jokes just don’t land now especially all of the gay bashing. It’s really weird to see that and very cringey. It’s also shot a bit pervy, which is supported by one of the extras on the disc of the car wash scene. Additionally, I’m not really a big fan of Kirsten Dunst and she had to carry most of this movie. Crazy that she was 17 when they made this as I wouldn’t have guessed that. Gabrielle Union was a full 10 years older than her at the time.
I’d have to view them again but I think I like a couple of the DTV sequels more than this movie.
