Viewing Notes

Another selection in the free six-pack offered to Fantastic Fest 2020 participants and coincidentally a movie I’ve been wanting to revisit. The other day in cataloging more of my collection noticed that I didn’t own this Sono flick and when I went to search for it discovered that it’s sadly OOP. This is nuts b/c Drafthouse Films picked it up for distro here but I guess they aren’t or cannot produce it any longer. And here I missed an opportunity to buy it from the vending machine for ten bucks. Ack!

It goes for big bucks now and there’s no company in the world that has it available on Blu-ray right now (unless you’re willing to spend some money from the secondary market). Was shocked by this. Anyways, was very happy to see it in the six pack in my AOD library for this FF2020 event (the freebie films are only good to view until the end of the fest Oct 2).

I recall not being as enamored by this movie as others at the time but still giving it praise for what it achieves. For the first two thirds of this viewing I was feeling the same way. However, that final third is just so great in so many ways that it overcome my initial thoughts and I do believe this is a truly wonderful movie.

I love that Jun Kunimura is given a meaty part rather than the usual supporting role. He’s so good. I forgot that Hiroki Hasegawa was even in this (he’s the “director”) but he’s marvelous in the final act. Of course I love Tak Sakaguchi and it’s nice to see him as this character. He’s so young and svelte. Also appreciate Fumi Nikaido a lot more esp. for being cast and acting the same age as she was at the time.

Now I’m more sad that this Blu-ray is unavailable. Maybe someone like Third Window will be able to pick up the rights for it someday given that they’ve done several of Sono’s films.
