Viewing Notes

Early morning viewing bc I woke up w/severe back pain… or I should say that the pain woke me up. Took some painkillers and decided to finally spin this up while waiting for the pain to lessen. Was glad White Slaves made it available again bc I’ve missed it on the last go-rounds. They bill this as a giallo but really it’s a fantastical horror mystery akin to Fulci’s The Beyond or perhaps Soavi’s The Church would be a more apt comparison. This does give off some Fulci vibes, however, in both the mood and atmosphere.

I’ll keep the giallo tag for now but contend that it doesn’t really fit outside of the mystery element. Still haven’t seen Soavi’s The Sect but I’d guess that would have more in common with this film than any staple giallo flick. That’s because this movie involves a sect and some ancient text that this professor is sent to investigate. Things get really weird as he soon learns that everyone seems a bit off.

Given so many other Italian horror flicks that have found new life w/boutique labels I’m surprised this one hasn’t been restored and released. It could use it and is a worthy film that works much better if approached as horror fantasy over gialli.

Oh! wanted to note that I totally thought this was a late seventies/ early eighties flick based on the look & feel. Would need have guessed this was a late eighties production!
