Viewing Notes

Went down to the Marcus Addison Cinema which is roughly 14mi away (but a 30min drive) to catch a five dollar matinee. Normal large theater w/recliners so I missed that wonderful Atmos and rumbly chair effect. It was nice to see on the big screen again and allowed me to get past some of the issues I had on the first viewing. Enjoyed more on this round and giving a confident 7/10.

Still not pleased with sudden narrative shift this film takes from KOTM but on its own it works fine. They could’ve removed the entire KOTM cast and had a better movie. The Scooby Gang stuff to reveal APEX and MechaG does nothing the audience isn’t already going to get or could get directly from APEX and probably would’ve flowed better. Could’ve spent that time on the cut scenes around the failed expedition to Hollow Earth or other stuff (like Reddick’s scene). Just thinking about about the Scooby Gang scenes (and I like Millie Bobby Brown!) if all had been removed nothing would change. They still could’ve shown the mecha-eye tease on its own when Godzilla attacks APEX and later shown the skull crawler scene on its own when they rev up MechaG. Then discussed how the Ghidorah head is talking to the other head in MechaG. Serizawa still done dirty. Did he survive or what?

Still the same nitpicks like how does Dr. Nathan Lind know how to pilot the H.E.A.V. ship? A ship he’s just been introduced to in Antarctica? Is he already a trained pilot from his Monarch days? Man, one throwaway sentence could’ve solved that “I think I can pilot this… it’s just like the _____ I used to fly in Monarch!” Others like Godzilla standing in the middle of the ocean again. Small stuff but none that derail the overall movie or main narrative.

Jia is still the best character and the emotional core of the movie. Take out all the Scooby Gang for more of her and Kong. Also, Eiza Gonzalez is just perfect. She’s evil from the get-go and we know she’s up to something nefarious. Solid villainy. Love her.

Another positive: the movie is paced well and that’s probably due to all the cuts for story flow. It just moves from setpiece to setpiece. The only interruptions are by the unneeded Scooby Gang sleuthing. Totally get that they wanted *some* tie back to KOTM but nah that stuff wasn’t necessary.

I like this movie and would watch it again enthusiastically. Still in my third spot but way above KOTM.
