Viewing Notes

Giving a soft 7/10 for now mostly for the emotional beats and some kaiju battles. What I enjoyed most, however, was the Dolby Atmos and rumble seats. When the Dolby intro started a young girl a few seats down my row said “WHY IS IT SO LOUD.” hahahaha

This is yet another Monsterverse flick where I walked out with mixed feelings. But more favorable than KOTM for sure. I’d put this movie 3rd behind G2014 and Skull Island. That said, if I had the ability to view this at home right now I’d probably watch it again tonight or tomorrow. The main issue for me is disregarding story elements from previous films (like dismissing all the previous kaiju introduced in KOTM at the outset) and only choosing a few to keep (the ghidorah head). Then establishing APEX as this big thing as the foil for the heroes. Maybe on a rewatch it will all sit better. Just weird how they advanced the story from each film, particularly from KOTM. Also sad to learn that Jessica Henwick was cut from movie but understandable given the runtime. Guessing Lance Reddick had a larger role at some point but was trimmed.

Not that it was difficult given the premise tease, but it’s amusing that it was so easy to predict how this was gonna down by the end. Overall a fun movie with plenty of stupid filling the gaps between kaiju battles. I am happy that the movie seems to be doing well given its availability on HBO Max. My theater was the most packed one I’ve attended since the pandemic, which was esp. surprising for a early matinee on a weekday.

Found this in my TL after I wrote up my notes:

Explains a lot and why it feels like some of the character development was reduced (ex. Ren Serizawa).
