Overview

In 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, a young grifter named Estella is determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.

Viewing Notes

Wow. I love this reinvention of this character. Lots of thoughts I’ll get to later but really glad I caught this in theater instead of waiting for the D+. Gorgeous set design & dressing. Now I wanna listen to Black Sabbath.

h/t to Tonia for tipping me to the cheap Tuesday. Was only six bucks!

additional thoughts:

Emma Thompson is truly a treasure. She’s just perfect. The other Emma is excellent as expected and completely inhabits this character. Was impressed by Paul Walter Hauser doing his best Bob Hoskins impersonation. Mark Strong doesn’t get much to do but he’s a presence.

Read a lot of criticism about the needle drops but damn this is a killer soundtrack. Sure, some tracks may be a little to obvious/on the nose but they all mostly work within the context. The song towards the very end really made me smile.

The visuals and world-building create such a rich backdrop for this story. Given that it centers around fashion it’s even more important to get it right and I was in awe at how well both fashion and the set design meshed. Throw the songs and wonderful acting on top of it and it really is a super enjoyable movie.
