Overview

When a former actor moves into an apartment building with the intention of commiting suicide, he is saved by a Taoist priest who used to specialize in hunting Chinese hopping vampires: or Jiāngshī. Elsewhere in the building, a woman turns to a specialist in black magic to bring her husband back to life.

When I was looking at previously seen titles from FF that I’ve been wanting to revisit this one really stood out b/c I was lukewarm on it. I’m slightly more favorable towards it now but stand by my initial assessment. Definitely a mood movie that’s as much about the atmosphere as it is the story. Other than some groovy imagery / FX that approach still didn’t work for me.

What I do like: Kara Wai, of course. She’s dynamite. Richard Ng as the undead/vampire. Such a cool turn by him as a veteran actor. I like the twins but feel like that subplot could’ve been removed and it wouldn’t change the story. The visuals of them running on the wall is great. The action sequences are really nice.

I would watch this again and feel like it will continue to grow on me. Really wish Well GO USA would include some special features on their release. If I could find another Blu release better than that one I would get it.
