Way overdue revisit. What is really great (and clearly intentional, duh) is envisioning each story beat set in the Edo period with ronin taking a contract then getting betrayed. Despite not having seen this for maybe 15yrs+ I was surprised how much of it I recalled. Power of a truly excellent movie.
