Viewing Notes

Crazy that I haven’t watched / logged this since we started logging movies. I saw this in theater back when it got released here in 1999 (at the old AMC Randhurst) and watched a couple more times on DVD. A few scenes burned into my brain. However, there were many things I didn’t recall. Like Lau Ching-wan as the detective fighting along side Jet Li’s Black Mask. So great to see him here. Forgot the humor bits esp. with Karen Mok, which is so weird anyways bc I always associate her w/being a badass cop or something. Not a character like this.

Of course the one scene I’ve never forgotten and think about occasionally is the fight between Black Mask and Françoise Yip on the tower. Had a crush on her since catching Rumble in the Bronx in theater when I lived in Cleveland. Adore her in these films and she’s great here.

The negative of this movie is the shitty ass dubbed release we’ve been stuck with. There was a time when I was hunting down the original language release back that was back when DVD was all I could find. Would love to get a blu-ray of that OG version. It would improve the viewing experience. Kinda surprised Arrow or Eureka hasn’t done a double feature set w/both films.

Btw, to keep the theme of this year and my projects going, this stars Jet Li, Yuen Woo-ping is the action director, and Tsui Hark is a producer.
