RIP Ryuichi Sakamoto
January 17, 1952 — March 28, 2023
Ryuichi Sakamoto’s passing was announced today and I learned that he did the score for this animated feature so it seemed like a good time to revisit. Easily been 20 years since I last viewed this. I watched it a couple times since my first viewing in 98 or 99.
Still amazed this was produced in the mid-eighties. Everything feels so vibrant and beautiful like it was a late nineties production. Quite the story, too, for that period and not the typical cyberpunk or dystopian futuristic stuff in most anime from the 80s. Excellent score ofc.
Sakamoto will be missed but he left us an incredible legacy and will not be forgotten. I’ll probably revisit CODA this week.

Oh also learned that Shinji Higuchi was an assistant director on this!
