Viewing Notes

This is a movie that has been popping up in my TL in recent months via #ActionTwitter so I felt it was time for a rewatch and reevaluation. I know why I was so down on this on its release and some of that I’ve gotten over with time and having seen thousands of movies since (my attitude and opinion on film and filmmaking).

Credit where credit is due; the action is solid, Rain showed up and is all business. Naomie Harris is in this! Love her. They threw Sho Kosugi a bone and that was a nice gesture. This is super violent and bloody. Love the limbs flying everywhere.

Wanted this to be another F&F sidequel but Sung Kang is not a nice guy so boo to that. But that opening sequence is fun. Still not crazy about the story and some character moments. The fantasy stuff is a bit much and holds this back from being a true 7 out of 10. Also too much action happens in the dark. Still an enjoyable movie that should’ve had at least two sequels.

Watched the bonus feature with Chad Stahelski talking about training Rain and how good he was picking up the moves and sequences from his dance and performance background. I didn’t realize Stahelski worked on this but it makes sense after seeing that action. Rain trained for six months and looks so jacked by the end. It’s unfortunate they didn’t make more of these or that he didn’t pursue more action films. I’m guessing it was a lot and he just didn’t want to go thru all that again for a disappointing result.
