Viewing Notes

Sometimes I wonder if some movies are heralded simply bc they have a cult status and are unavailable to the masses. This movie is one such example; heard about for ages then finally saw it a few years ago (despite owning it on VHS for much longer) and was underwhelmed. Still a decent movie that has a third act that goes hard but it’s mostly fine.

Decided to revisit today during the DKUTV horror movie marathon and p much had the same reaction. It’s fine! The puppeteering and practical FX are terrific. Nobuko Miyamoto is giving it her all and it’s great to see her be the main hero of the story. Absolutely worth viewing for her and that batshit final act.

I’m guessing this will never get a proper release bc it’s a video game adaptation and the rights are split between different companies. This broadcast was a VHS rip with fansubs. I’m pretty sure the VHS I bought at SJ Mitsuwa back in the day has no English subs.
