Viewing Notes

The last real big Michelle Yeoh film I had on my unseen list (I think?). She’s terrific in this powerful story about Aung San Suu Kyi and her family while the Burmese junta held her prisoner for 15 years. Just a wild story and this movie directed by Luc Besson really nails how fucking evil that military regime was.

Watching this and how good Yeoh is makes me wonder why she was so happy to get the Everything Everywhere script commenting that she had been waiting her entire career for a role like that. Wonder if there were problems on set during production or with Besson. Never hear her talk about this movie nor ever see it mentioned.

Just read this and could be the reason she never talks about it:
“Following Suu Kyi’s controversial reign as State Counsellor of Myanmar and her defense of the Rohingya genocide, both filmmaker Luc Besson and screenwriter Rebecca Fran stated they regretted making this film.”
