Overview

They thought they were coming to study a mysterious town hidden in the mountains of Japan. Instead, they’ve discovered that their Professor brought them to Yasaka for a much darker purpose. Now Mikoto and the other girls are trapped in a monstrous nightmare. As the villagers become increasingly more insane, the college students find themselves at the center of arcane rituals focused on blood and rotting flesh. Their only chance is to escape, but their captors are far too numerous and know the lay of the local land far too well.

Finished the “sequel” so I could return these Blu-rays to Ron. They could’ve easily just released both films together as one movie but I suppose this way they generate more revenue? Same as the previous movie, this one could be trimmed down to V-cinema length and been a tighter more exciting film. Maybe.

At times I thought this was better than the first movie then other times thought it was worse. So a wash and earns the same rating. I like the indie film production knowing how some of it is done (ex. the blood spurt tubes just off camera). The bamboo forest location is cool to see, having visited one in Kyoto.

Still an average film that needed a little more teeth. Almost as if they were hesitant to take it farther. I do like the lead actress, gravure model Moemi Katayama, as the final girl of sorts. Cool that she was cast Kore-eda’s SHOPLIFTERS released the following year. That’s another one I need to revisit.
