Zero Woman (1995)

Directed by Daisuke Gotô

Action | Crime

Overview

A gang of young thieves try to rob a mob boss, but their heist is interrupted by an officer of the Tokyo Police Department’s elite Zero Division. They get away with the loot, but the officer, a beautiful, more-than-slightly psychotic young woman who also happens to be an excellent shot, is tracking them down. To bring the case to a successful conclusion, she must deal with rival crime gangs, small- time crooks, and the wavering loyalties of her own partner.

Viewing Notes

Part of the Zero Woman “franchise” but nothing to do with the seventies film other than the name and maybe a loosely similar main character. Unlike that movie this installment is dull as dishwater. This is despite getting Natsuki Ozawa topless as often as possible, which frankly when the movie isn’t focused on her scenes it’s interminable. Had they cut this down to 70 minutes and just followed her it would be a better film.

Didn’t realize until watching this one that there were no other Zero Woman films after Red Handcuffs in 1974. Two decades later they make this one and it pales in comparison (they made eight more of these after this!).

Another thing that didn’t help was watching the shitty English dub bc the JP version is an entirely different movie, The Edge (1997), which was oddly amusing but also annoying because I can’t watch the Japanese version! So weird.
