aka THE FLYING SWORDSMAN
Another potential movie night selection. Sadly, despite being a Well Go USA release, it’s only available on DVD. This was on my radar for a long time and was super happy when it popped up on Tubi. Sadly, like many other foreign films that require subtitles, the subs are very jenky and sometimes wouldn’t appear at all. Not the best viewing experience which is why I looked up the physical media release. Perhaps I will just buy a used DVD and maybe it will eventually get a Blu release.
This story is based on a famous novel originally published as a newspaper serial in 1959. I’m sure studios like Shaw have done an adaptation or two as this movie feels like a modern Shaw Production. Super slick w/loads of computer VFX and whatnot. But it’s a cool story with cool characters, in this case all villains looking for the same treasure. It’s not perfect and I’m not a fan of fantasy fighting as depicted in modern films (in the 70s, 80s and 90s films it’s fine and often charming) but it has some neat setpieces, effort (budget) and again the characters raise this above most of the recent junk getting churned out in China. The villain portrayed by Chen Zihan is so deliciously wicked like straight out of Ninja Scroll, which I recently revisited. She’s excellent.
