Cyborg detective Batou is assigned to investigate a series of murders committed by gynoids—doll-like cyborgs, which all malfunctioned, killed, then self-destructed afterwards. The brains of the gynoids initialize in order to protect their manufacturer’s software, but in one gynoid, which Batou himself neutralized, one file remains: a voice speaking the phrase “Help me.”

Great to finally see this on the big screen! the new 4K looks excellent. Look forward to owning that in the future. I think this movie was initially panned on release bc “oh why are they making a sequel to one of the greatest anime features of all time” nonsense back when 9 years between films seemed like a long time. Another criticism was probably the lack of Major Kusanagi, “how can you make a sequel to GITS and not have her front and center?!”
Batou is the lead here and I’m actually happen they did something different w/the story instead of rehashing the first movie. It’s a slow burn mystery police procedural until the third act when the action kicks in. ofc it still has the cyberterrorism themes and some neat robot tech. It’s a different movie with its own groove. Cool that we had a decent crowd for the Japanese language version.
