Viewing Notes

Forgot how long this movie is! Perhaps that’s why I haven’t revisited recently. It def feels long as some of the gags are stretched. But in a way it feels like Lau Kar-Leung was just just getting warmed up for the Lady is a Boss. This has most of the same primary cast and really leans into the humor. Jason purposely screened the dubbed version for the laughs but I think this would’ve been as effective in the OG language.

This English dub crew isn’t very good compared the team that did many of Cheng Cheh’s venom flicks and many others from that mid-to-late seventies period. So this dub was a bit annoying to hear, and I typically like these Shaw dubs esp. when it’s the right voice actors.

The crowd enjoyed the movie as expected. As I told Jason afterwards, Lau Kar-Leung directed these more as a vehicle for himself disguised as a “woman empowerment” flick. And it works here and Lady is a Boss. Ofc Kara Wai is terrific as usual and I told Jason to seek out Lady is a Boss bc it’s the better movie of the two. This did make me think of Gallants, which I need to revisit.

Overall a very fun screening in the VAC Basement. Not fun was walking out to a blizzard and driving home in that shit; 119 is already bad without the snow.
