Viewing Notes

via Netflix

Space-originating plants are changing people into something else with their pods. My first introduction to the Body Snatchers was with the 90s film starring Gabrielle Anwar, so getting to see this one, which is also a remake of the 56 version was a treat.  The practical effects do look pretty decent which surprised me a lot that they’d held up so well over the years.  They’re not all perfect though.  Some are much better than others.  What sold this for me though was the paranoia that seeps throughout like Carpenter’s The Thing.  They picked some great actors and it was a treat to see Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Leonard Nimoy, Veronica Cartwright, and a young Jeff Goldblum in this.  One thing I did really love with this was the sound design, and although like a lot of 70s films, the sound quality isn’t great, they did some neat things with this where what we’re hearing at the start, bugs, wildlife, etc, diminishes to where we don’t hear it at all near the end.  It’s subtle and adds to the paranoia present in the film.
