Viewing Notes

I went into this expecting Van Helsing: The Witchening and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Certainly it’s not a masterpiece, but it does what it does fairly well.

I was especially impressed with the makeup and creature effects, which seemed, for the most part, to be actual physical FX, digitally enhanced when needed. The witches really seemed to take their makeup cues from Nightbreed, which is great. I’m not a huge Nightbreed fan but I really dug the creature makeup and FX from that film.

I was also happy to see Derek Mears and Zoe Bell roll by in the credits at the end of the film. Strangely, this was the third film in the last week with Mears in it that I’ve watched, completely by coincidence. Two of those were him in normal character roles instead of behind a mask. The other two were The Aggression Scale and Gangster Squad.
