Overview

Private detective and former football player Harry Moseby gets hired on to what seems a standard missing person case, as a former Hollywood actress whose only major roles came thanks to being married to a studio mogul wants Moseby to find and return her daughter. Harry travels to Florida to find her, but he begins to see a connection between the runaway girl, the world of Hollywood stuntmen, and a suspicious mechanic when an unsolved murder comes to light.

Viewing Notes

I love discovering great movies from the 1970s that I didn’t know about. The Driver was one, and Night Moves is definitely another.

Night Moves features one of Gene Hackman’s best performances and is another notch in Irving Penn’s belt as director (he also directed Bonnie and Clyde). A young, exceedingly beautiful Melanie Griffith also turns in a strong performance. A young James Woods is also in this being, well, James Woodsy.

Great film, full of nihilism and cynicism like the best movies from the ‘70s were. Right up there with Chinatown in the neo noir department.

This has been on my to-watch list for a long time… missed it when it was on NWI. Def one I need to carve out some time to see. Actually I’m thinking of doing a Hackman mini-project. He’s been in so many great films I need to see and/or revisit.

A Hackman mini-project would be great! And fairly easy, since you’d have plenty to choose from. I’d easily recommend both this and The Conversation for that list.
