Viewing Notes

A simmering, menacing, unsettling movie with searing performances by Pearce and Pattinson, who both convey more emotion through body language and facial expressions than most actors could ever hope to be capable of.

The smattering of violence throughout the film always caught me off-guard, even when I thought I was prepared for it. This is unflattering, non-glorified, harsh violence, shocking in it’s casual brutality. It feels and sounds realistic and is deeply unsettling. And mostly, it is without consequence, like so much violence in the real world.

Another thing that affected me a lot was the constant presence of flies and other bugs. They are everywhere, always, flying about the actors’ faces, getting in their mouths, noses and eyes; crawling across their sweat-covered skin. I took this to be a symbol of death; that these people are already dead; everything around them is dead or dying: everything and everyone they knew, all the social mores and the intricacies of society sloughing away.

Even though I’ve seen some great movies already this year, I can’t imagine this won’t be in my top ten at year’s end.
