Literature professor Jim Bennett leads a secret life as a high-stakes gambler. Always a risk-taker, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster and offers his own life as collateral. Staying one step ahead, he pits his creditor against the operator of an illicit gambling ring while garnering the attention of Frank, a paternalistic loan shark. As his relationship with a student deepens, Bennett must risk everything for a second chance.

Sorry I slept on this one at the theaters as I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Some great dialogue, especially for John Goodman, who is brilliant.

After seeing your rating I’m sorry I passed on this too. Now I’m curious why it was panned on release.

It’s definitely a different movie than all the ads and trailers would have had you believe at the time. More drama and some truly hilarious (in a good way) dialogue.

I’ll place a hold on it at the library.
