Viewing Notes

Final movie of the trio! Definitely need to see this on its own in a Dolby theater. The sound at the Drafthouse is always disappointing.

While it was fun watching all three in a row, the final one suffered a bit from my fatigue in watching countless people get killed. I mean by the time the third one rolled around we were up to our eyeballs in dead people. It starts to all blend together and get monotonous.

That, combined with the obviousness (I mean, c’mon, this is the only one with a subtitle and it’s a play on para bellum which means to prepare for war, so…) of this one not being as standalone as the other two (in that they neatly wrapped up their stories even as they connected together nicely) explains my somewhat lower rating on this one (note, I revised my rating upwards after a few days away from the triple feature. I originally rated it a 6.5).

The world-building (destruction?) felt too forced this time around, whereas in the other two it just fit in really nicely. Also, if I hear the word “excommunicado” one damn more time, I’m gonna punch somebody (probably Ian McShane).

That aside, there are some hugely entertaining action set pieces in this that I absolutely loved. The knife fight scene with Tiger Chen, the horse stable scene, the sword cycle battle, the dogs fight scene, and the Mark Dacascos/Yayan Ruhian/Cecep Arif Rahman epic fight scene are all great!

Zero, Dacascos’ character, was just a fun character all around. He reminded me of Gordon Liu. It feels like he’s supposed to represent toxic fanboyism as he ultimately tries to destroy that which he idolizes and compares himself to.

Now that I’ve had some time and distance from the triple feature, I’m revising my rating on this. Still need to see it again in an Atmos theater.
