Viewing Notes

Ti Lung and David Chiang make great co-stars in this massive, historical battle film which has hundreds of extras all over the place. The Peace River Bridge stand by Ti Lung is great, as is the surprise attack on the King’s castle where Chiang’s character makes an epic defense. The horse quartering scene is also pretty grisly and epic.

Surprised I haven’t seen this one (and I don’t own it!). Are you doing a Chang Cheh project?

I’m always surprised when I watch one of these and discover you haven’t already logged it! Often our comments will mirror each other’s too.

Yeah, I decided to watch as many of his films as I could find on Amazon, in order of release.

The ones that are dubbed instead of subbed irritate me but at least the prints are in really nice shape and in the right aspect ratio. You can never count on the DVDs from Netflix not being a pan and scan so I gave up on them years ago. I wish I could own a lot of these on Blu but so many of them aren’t released. Even the DVDs are pricey where they exist in a lot of cases.

Yes, I have noticed our notes are similar and sometimes nearly identical. :) Cheh is my most viewed director but I’m glad there’s still films of his to watch and that many of them exist on Prime. Many I need to revisit since I initially watched them on El Rey Network, which wasn’t ideal.

I was buying a few of the HK imports via eBay sellers but like you noted it’s pricey. What’s worse is that most of these won’t continue to get produced or get Blu treatment as interest wanes in HK for physical media.

Agreed. I picked up a couple of Dragon Dynasty DVD sets today from 2nd and Charles for that very reason.

I’m surprised that there hasn’t been any upgraded boxsets with the Shaw films. 88 Films has the newest catalog of Shaw films yet it’s mostly horror and random. Do you recall a few years ago when there was this big announcement about how many of the Shaw films were getting restored and were going back to theaters for special screenings? Nothing ever came of it (it was the year when they had a few Shaw screenings at FF). I know that’s why so many of the films appeared on Amazon w/good transfers but no other news since.

Yeah, that’s what kept me from buying a bunch of them on DVD as well, and now many of them are out of print or hard to find. I really need to get a region-free player so I can take advantage of the foreign labels.
