Viewing Notes

Happy Birthday to me! The middle film in my three day, three films in theater celebration, this time with the whole fam. We did an 8:10 PM showing as only the 8 and 10 shows were in the Prime theater with Atmos (STAR WARS and 1917 are filling all the other theaters, for better or worse). Since portions of this were shot using a 65mm (digital) camera, I’d love to see this in IMAX but alas.

I enjoyed this a lot! It just jumps right into it, eschewing the typical prelude to give context and backstories to the characters. Instead it feeds you bits and pieces as you need them throughout the film, which worked out mostly fine.

The cinematography, production design and coloring were all great. I especially liked the design of the diving suits and the various corridors in the mining facilities.

The cast was excellent, especially kstew. I was worried that it’d lean too hard into TJ Miller’s comedic antics but it kept that restrained enough to actually make his character likeable and believable.

There were a couple of jump scares where nearly everyone in the theater came out of their seats. I just had a big grin on my face. I love it when films elicit a communal physical response like that.

Everyone kept saying this looked like ALIEN in the ocean but after seeing it, it felt more like THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE but with monsters. I’d totally pay money to see an actual POSEIDON ADVENTURE but with monsters chasing the people trying to escape a capsized cruise ship! HOW FUN WOULD THAT BE?!

Really hoping this gets a 4K/Atmos release on Blu because I can’t wait to see this again in the home theater!

This would be great to see in Dolby or IMAX! I didn’t have either option bc of 1917 and Star Wars taking up all the available theaters in those formats. This is such a solid film that delivers exactly what it should even if it’s derivative. It’s nice to see a big screen genre film pay attention to details and still manage to develop the characters organically w/o big exposition drops. I’m sad it didn’t do well at the box office but it’s one that will find an audience when it hits streaming/home video.

It’s always cool when you can see a fun movie like this on your birthday!

Yeah it was a good choice for a late(r) evening movie; lots of fun!
