Loving Mubi for allowing me to discover films like this. Really starting to like their curated approach to film.
Gorgeous cinematography anchors this by turns beautiful and horrific film about the French Indochinese conflict at the tail end of WWII in 1945. It starts with a Japanese massacre of a french outpost and then centers on the sole survivor, a soldier whose brother and wife were killed.
This would make a good companion piece to APOCALYPSE NOW but it’d be a bleak double feature.

Discovering films that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise is my favorite thing about MUBI. Got quite obsessive about viewing several titles on there last year that I’d have no other way to view as several have never been released here. I really miss having the service but I’m glad you’re watching more on it. How long does your trial run? When I cancelled they offered me a lower rate but I still had to kill it. Hopefully it will stick around and I can renew it.

90 day trial, which I think is up now. But totally worth keeping for me, at least for the time being. I’ve been seriously considering dumping Netflix, at least the disc portion.

I gave up the Netflix DVDs in 2018 and have considered dumping the Instawatch after I did a cost analysis. It was was easily the most expensive per movie watched (I just haven’t used NWI all that much in the last few years) compared to the other platforms. Basically was paying around six bucks per movie watched! So I made an effort to use it a little more but also sacrificed things like MUBI. If I could still get MUBI for what I initially paid for it I definitely would have kept it (around $35/year).
