Viewing Notes

Stopped work a little early for once and started my weekend with Bava’s murder mystery from 1963, THE EVIL EYE (there are two cuts on the disc, I watched the slightly longer Italian version). The print is in great shape and really shows off the excellent cinematography and lighting. If this weren’t so obviously Hitchcockian it would probably stand up better on its own.

John Saxon and lead Letícia Román are both great and play off each other pretty well. The Rome locations are gorgeous, especially so in black and white. I really enjoyed Román’s character. She’s the right combination of whimsical, pretty and determined which makes the movie an enjoyable, if light, watch.
