Viewing Notes

RIP John Saxon
August 5, 1935 - July 25, 2020

When the news broke of John Saxon’s passed today I knew I had to revisit one of his films. So many great ones to chose from but decided to go back to one of his earliest roles where he is so dashing and handsome and just perfect for the movie. There’s a scene where he’s at a fine dining restaurant with Nora (Letícia Román) and the other doctor and Saxon’s Bassi is just chomping away on gum during the whole scene. So funny and perfect in defining that character.

I watched the EVIL EYE AIP cut and it’s still a really good flick and late film noir / early giallo. Had this been shot in lurid colors it would be right up there w/Bava’s true giallo BLOOD AND BLACK LACE released the following year.

I’ll probably watch a few more Saxon films in the coming weeks but it was nice to revisit his character here and celebrate such a terrific career of genre film. Even when I saw him earlier this year in NIGHTMARE BEACH his presence made that movie better.
