Overview

There is no place more hallowed in the martial art world than China’s Shaolin Temple. This special place deserves a special epic, which is what the martial arts maestro delivers in this battle between a brave brand of Chinese boxers and literally thousands of Qing troops - complete with betrayals, intrigues, and such novel fighting machines as 108 wooden robots. The conflicts grow in complexity, intensity and even suspense as monks struggle to stay alive in the face of overwhelming odds.

Viewing Notes

Stellar ensemble cast in another Chang Cheh directed effort. This is basically a prequel to FIVE SHAOLIN MASTERS with David Chiang and Ti Lung reprising their roles from that film.

Honestly though, Alexander Fu Sheng steals the show with some great martial arts choreography and his deftness at combining some comedic stuff in with his martial arts. I really think of him as a precursor to Jackie Chan.

Last time I saw this it was a 35mm print at Alamo Drafthouse in Littleton, back when they still showed 35mm prints before their projector broke. To my knowledge they’ve never fixed it and haven’t shown any 35mm prints in a long time.
