From a sound perspective, everything I see at Orchard that isn’t in one of their main theaters sounds flat as fuck (which probably outweighs the auto-masking screen but goddamn do I love the auto-masking screens), and HYPNOTIC was no exception which really took away from the film. The performances aren’t particularly inspiring either, nor is the editing or the direction. I’m inclined to think that Rodriguez had his run and his good days are now behind him.
Which is too bad because the premise of this film is a lot more interesting than you see in the trailer (which is a good thing) and has the potential for some fun storytelling around it. After the movie was done I wondered how I’d respond to this if it were made in the ‘90s and released by VS or someone and I had to conclude that I’d probably be more forgiving of its faults.
I thought it was particularly humorous that Rodriguez thought enough of this to leave it open to a sequel. Can’t say I was expecting that.

The whole sequel teaser is hilarious bc really we just didn’t get enough of this story, right? LOL
There were a couple of films it recalled and it was amusing that Rodriguez decided to make his version of those albeit at a lower budget. Then I learned this was a $65million production and I’m flabbergasted. How?! Most of this was shot on his own backlot studio in Austin. However, not surprised this movie has been sitting on the shelf for a couple years.
