It gets a little better as it goes along but the first third of this is very poorly, lazily written. Scott Eastwood is the most charismatic of the cast. Rinko Kikuchi’s talents are just completely wasted here; her character only exists as a plot point (two actually but still).
The movie eschews any type of real character building for the spectacle of giant mecha vs. giant kaiju battles, the primary one being in Tokyo in what I assume is an effort to spiritually connect this with the legacy of the original kaiju, Godzilla.
Unlike the first movie, this might play a little better in my home theater than it did on the big screen; but the shoddy writing is also more apparent.

weird that I’ve never watched this at home but seen it 3x all in theater, the last at G-Fest where ofc it played like gangbusters.
