Viewing Notes

well I did not hate this. I kinda expected I would since I’m not a Seth MacFarlane fan. With him directing and in the lead role it’s a double whammy. After a sluggish first third, the movie gets better as it becomes less jokey joke and more serious and romance driven. I adore Charlize Theron and she’s great as a counterbalance to MacFarlane’s wooden acting and blank stares. He really does have a featureless face.

Oddly the rest of the supporting cast does nothing interesting. NPH has the best comedy beats but flat jokes abound by the rest. Also odd is the gorgeous cinematography; this is a beautiful film at times with that western backdrop. Honestly if the movie had been more a straight up western with a touches of humor with less crassness this would be a stronger film.

I’d love to see a girls with guns western featuring Theron.

I read Seth’s novel version of the movie. It was crappy so I knew the film would had poor ratings.

Yeah I’m not surprised this is a dud. I am surprised at the level of talent MacFarlane secured yet provides nothing of interest for them to do other than spout insults or poorly written jokes. Really a wasted opportunity to do something interesting within the genre.
