The Squad (2011)

Directed by Jaime Osorio Marquez

War | Horror

Overview

The air is thick with tension as a military squad proceeds to the foot of a mountain base, where they’re ordered to wait for backup and hold their position. The mountain is shrouded in fog and the men are exhausted. They’ve been fighting guerrillas on enemy turf for some time, and they’re worn down by the stress and anxiety of battle. The men don’t want to wait; they want to charge up the hill, fearing that their comrades in the base have been overrun by the guerrillas. The squad’s leader tries futilely to keep his men in line while dealing with his insolent second-in-command.

Viewing Notes

Interesting premise but spends a lot of time wheel-spinning. As soon as this started it felt like a Fantastic Fest movie and sure enough it did screen at FF2011. I didn’t see it then of course but the WOM wasn’t hot, IIRC. Probably why I didn’t bother picking it up in my schedule.

Overall I don’t think it’s a bad movie. It’s overly long and could trim 15 minutes or so to tighten it up and increase the tension.

I picked this up on a whim during the Scream Factory sale. Didn’t realize it’d screened at FF.

When I was picking movies from the SF sale I was cross-checking w/my library network. If the movie was in network I placed a hold and did not add to my SF order. Was surprised this film was available and also glad since, as you noted, it’s not all that good. Not something I’d bother to sit through again anyways.

Speaking of, I finally got the other 3/5 of my SF order yesterday. Pretty happy with my choices.

I picked up PRINCE OF DARKNESS, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 and SCANNERS II and III. The PRECINCT 13 disc is excellent! Haven’t watched any of the others yet.
