Viewing Notes

This is 100 percent my jam.

MASTER Z: where everything seemingly happens on the same street, Bar Street. Come for the Wire-Fu, stay for the steaks.

This movie is one of those weird things that feels like it was a studio project through and through from the very studio lot street / nightclub / restaurant etc and how contained every scene / sequence is framed and all wardrobe / costume design choices. It just doesn’t feel real. But that’s not a bad thing to me just an observation. (Think like Old Hollywood pictures done completely on a studio lot; reminds me of those)

The story is basic and a bit odd with all these characters somehow related or friends or something. I love Max Zhang being so committed and earnest throughout and everyone following along including Michelle Yeoh. But then there’s Dave Bautista who’s almost like a anime character in his acting and mannerisms. The cops are all cartoons.

Can totally understand why this movie would get negative reviews or be panned. It’s a poor imitation of the IP MAN films. Yet it’s so damn entertaining for everything I’ve noted here. I kept thinking, “I’m gonna watch this so many times in the future.”

Hell, if it were playing at a more convenient theater I’d go see it again (S. Barrington ain’t convenient).
