Viewing Notes

Finally finishing up this trilogy. Diminishing returns as these go along but still enjoyable for Takeshi’s specific eye towards each scene and how he develops the story to keep it compelling thru all the characters and turns. While not as good as the first two films, the simplicity of the plot this time around is appreciated. Same setup (a dumb yakuza does something bad to cross one gang that starts the ball rolling to bigger acts of revenge and whatnot) but I like how it spends the time in the first half setting the table for Otomo (Takeshi) to fuck everything up.

Nice capper for the trilogy. He even says in the hour+ “making of” featurette that he was never satisfied w/the ending of OUTRAGE bc he knew there must be some kind of revenge. So he made BEYOND OUTRAGE. After that with the intro to the new characters (Chang) and that ending, he knew there must be closure on all the stories.

One of the things I love about these films is how these yakuza all really hate each other but have to be respectful. And the large cast of so many greats is always nice to see. Goddamn I miss Ren Osugi. The year prior to this he was in Shin Godzilla as the Prime Minister. Here he’s the yakuza chairman making all the big decisions to fuck over his underboss.

I only discovered this existed a few months ago! That’s why I recently watched Outrage and Beyond Outrage to get a handle on that world again before watching this. Hadn’t seen either since their Fantastic Fest premieres.
