Viewing Notes

Happy 20th Anniversary to this film. In some of my anniversary revisits this is one that I can say I was there 20 years to the day it was released. Kinda wild to think it was two decades ago but I even texted my buddy over in South Africa to tell him of this special date since he was with me on that night July 14, 2000 at Regal Lincolnshire, opening night of this film. I suppose I remember this so vividly b/c I was so hyped to finally see the X-Men on the big screen. And this was that wonderful time before social media so there was nothing spoiled or worn out before the movie hit.

This viewing tonight was only my 4th or 5th time watching this movie. I know I viewed it once as soon as it hit home video. Then another time when I watched all three in a row before the new era of X films came into play. But that was before I was logging my views religiously (and I only tracked my theater views). I’m a little surprised at how well this has held up. There’s a lot of good stuff here and the screenplay is decent. Maybe I knew this and forgot but I saw Corey Yuen in the credits as the action choreographer, which is neat. The best things are Prof X, Wolverine, Rogue and Magneto with A+ for the banter / rivalry between Logan and Cyclops. Also everyone looks so young but as noted before in the SWORDFISH comments, Hugh Jackman pretty much looks the same.

The bad things: Tyler Mane is a terrible Sabretooth. I love Ray Park but Toad was a bizarre choice as a villain when there are so many better ones. Mystique is great and kicks ass but no speaking lines? Fuck that. Halle Barry was done dirty w/that Storm dialogue and her action beats. Also weird to watch knowing all that we know about Bryan Singer these days.

Oh I wanted to also mention that what happens with Wolverine and Rogue at the end is some crazy foreshadowing to LOGAN. Of course they didn’t know it then but him giving some of his healing ability to save her life yet also reducing his own powers set that ball in motion. It made me a little sad when I saw that knowing that event led to his early death.

I had already earmarked this movie to watch for my 20 in 20 project so this was a perfect day for it. And I could finally crack open the Blu-ray I bought so long ago that the special offer included expired in 2011. Ope! Worth noting that the Blu does look and sound good. Really wild to see the World Trade Center when they model the attack on NYC knowing it would be gone a little over a year later.

Oh yeah I forgot to include in my notes that Jubilee is in this movie!!! I never noticed that before. Can’t believe all these movies later and they still couldn’t make her a significant part of the story.

Another thing: Stan Lee’s cameo is PERFECT. He’s just a hot dog vendor on the beach. No speaking lines or extended shot. Just a blink and you’ll miss him shot. Love the guy but I really wish that was how all his cameos were.
