Gorgeous movie with a beautiful color palette and tremendous use of natural light. Also a fun and mischievous story about this scholar getting drawn into this fantastical world of demons and ghosts. Billed as horror but this really supernatural fantasy. But sure if someone wanted to make the case, go for it.
This restoration was done a while ago but I hope this is another King Hu film that lands at Criterion or Eureka, the latter more likely, I’d guess, if it hasn’t already been earmarked for a release. This is like a warm blanket to get lost in and doze off into another world.

Kino Lorber released a restored from 4K print of this on Blu-ray in 2018 which I own but haven’t watched yet. I need to get on that. Of Hu’s other films, I think Film Movement released THE FATE OF LEE KHAN. A King Hu retrospective box set from Criterion sure would be nice though!

That’s good to know! This is a gorgeous film and one I’d love to own someday. I’m all for more King Hu films getting released but yeah it’d be nice to have a solid retrospect set.
