After a cavalry group is massacred by the Cheyenne, only two survivors remain: Honus, a naive private devoted to his duty, and Cresta, a young woman who had lived with the Cheyenne two years and whose sympathies lie more with them than with the US government. Together, they must try to reach the cavalry’s main base camp. As they travel onward, Honus is torn between his growing affection for Cresta.

There are some wild shifts in tone, purposefully done I’m sure, that are jolting, but overall a great movie buoyed by a stellar performance by Candice Bergen. She’s uncouth, very unladylike, and seriously sexy as hell.
Having been in the area of the Sand Creek Massacre while on vacation last year, I was already familiar with the final battle’s subject matter, but it was still sobering to watch. This had to have been a pretty controversial movie when it was released in 1971. And of course this is an anti-war movie in thin disguise and should be counted as a Vietnam protest film.

This movie sounds very familiar. Wonder if I had seen it back in the day. My library has it so I’m gonna check it soon.

Parts of it felt familiar so I’m guessing I may have seen it as a kid (maybe on HBO?).
