Overview

Guido Anselmi, a film director, finds himself creatively barren at the peak of his career. Urged by his doctors to rest, Anselmi heads for a luxurious resort, but a sorry group gathers—his producer, staff, actors, wife, mistress, and relatives—each one begging him to get on with the show. In retreat from their dependency, he fantasizes about past women and dreams of his childhood.

Viewing Notes

Long on my list of movies to watch. Glad I finally took the time (albeit sick on the couch but still) to watch this. Having recently seen Youth, it’s obvious in hindsight that there are a lot of similarities between the two. Both are set in a health spa retreat and both feature directors working on their next picture.

This is a meditation on life through a meditation on film and is so self-referential and circular in nature that it’s easy to get lost if you’re not paying close attention. Watching a movie made by a director making a movie about a director attempting to make a movie, and having fantasy and dream scenes within that, adds a lot of layers that are fun to sort out as you go along.

Oh wow I didn’t make the connection between YOUTH and this. It’s been a few years since I’ve seen this but now I see it as I think about it.

Sorry you’re sick (explains all the movies tallied!) but it looks like you’re making the best of it. :-)

It really made me want to re-watch YOUTH so that I can more directly compare the two!

And yeah, laying around sick, might as well watch movies. Hopefully back to work tomorrow but not sure.
