Viewing Notes

Still have lots of mixed feelings on this film. Most of the plot deals with the inability of modern bureaucracy-by-committee to make effective or timely decisions as well Japan’s co-dependence on America and inability to act unilaterally.

The final form of Godzilla is pretty terrifying and harkens back to the original Godzilla, but is largely undone by his googly eyes, lack of purpose and just general lack of movement. There’s nothing spectacular or awe-inspiring by the way he seems to glide through Tokyo; not much real stomping or directed attacks except for the scenes where he shoots shit out of his mouth, tail and dorsal fins, which were pretty cool.

And when he runs out of energy he just… takes a nap in the middle of the city, tail suspended in mid-air?

I did like the final shot of his tail which seemed to hint… at offspring perhaps? Or the bodies of atomic bomb victims?

And the professor who committed suicide left an origami puzzle to figure out how to stop him and save millions of lives and Japan itself? Fuck you dude.

I’m not opposed to a digitally rendered Godzilla from Toho but if this is the best they can muster up, then maybe just go back to miniatures and rubber suits.
