Dr. Strangegojira or: How I Learned to Start Worrying and Drop the Bomb
“It’s an underwater vent”
“It’s a small earthquake”
“It’s a whale”
So happy to see this on the big screen again. New 4K looks excellent. Audio is better too with the borrowed classic tracks getting slightly punched up. I didn’t let the misfires bother me as much and the pacing moves it along.
I laughed a lot at the dark comedy of the first half. A few others in my packed screening were also laughing. From the chatter afterwards it seems that more than a few folks were seeing this for the first time and perhaps expecting another Minus One.
It’s been so long since I last viewed this (7 years) that I forgot how insane this cast is. Just loaded with character actors. Kentaro Shimazu has a blink and you’ll miss him scene in a hallway; he’s not even credited on IMDb. I am surprised Anno and Higuchi didn’t cast any of the classic actors like Takarada or Tsuchiya in bit parts. Especially since the purposely use the vintage tracks in the score.
Gonna try to see it again maybe in a different cinema. I love this movie so much.
