Viewing Notes

Finished my viewing I started last night but was interrupted. Once again Wong Kar-wai has made a film that I don’t want to end. Mainly because it is so beautiful in that every frame is its own wonderful image. Where Donnie Yen’s Ip Man was full on action and nationalism, Wong Kar-wai has really romanticized the period and history.

Tony Leung is great as expected but it’s Zhang Ziyi that shines. She is such a vision of grace all while being such a badass. She’s exquisite here and makes the movie. It’s not surprising that Wong focuses more on the drama, relationships and humanity over the action. I honestly was hoping this would not be another rehash of what Jet Li and Donnie Yen already did. Fortunately it’s not.

So looking forward to seeing this on the big screen.
